Groningen is the capital city of Groningen province in the Netherlands. It is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands, with slightly more than 200,000 residents. Groningen is a vibrant university city. Students comprise an estimated 25% of its total population. Groningen was established more than 950 years ago. Historically, it was a semi-independent city-state, a member of the Hanseatic League, and the dominant regional power in the north of the Netherlands.

Conference venues

The conference will take place at the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society, the Baptist Church across from it, and the Academy building just around the corner. These are located in the historical city center, at a 15-minute walk from Groningen central station. The building of the Faculty dates back to the Middle Ages, though the current exterior and interior were created mostly when it was turned into a courthouse in 1754. The building of the Baptist Church dates back to 1813. It is used for a wide range of secular and oecumenical events. The current Academy building is the third academy building at the location. The first, built in 1614 was demolished in 1846 because of its poor state of repair. The second building was built in 1850, but burnt down in 1906. The current building was built in 1909.

Traveling to Groningen

Groningen is easily accessible by public transport (2hr train ride from Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam). The following websites provide more information. If you are at Groningen central station, don’t forget to look up and admire the interior of the station hall.

How to pay on the train and bus

Traveling with the OV chip card is usually the fastest and cheapest. You can buy OV chipkaart train tickets at the machine at the train station. Or you can buy an e-ticket at NS.nl. You can go to ticket machines to buy regional and national train tickets and to top up and pick up OV-chipkaart products.

On many bus routes you pay less with the OV chip card than with a ticket. You can now also purchase some bus tickets online via Q-buzz. A single ticket on the bus can only be paid with a PIN/credit card, cash is no longer possible.
